Artist's Statement

Creativity is the ability to see relationships where none exist.
~ Thomas Disch

I choose the hexagonal pattern in recent collages based on its prevalence in nature. The hexagonal shape is characteristic of all inorganic crystalline patterns which have more order and uniformity than organic, living patterns. The hexagonal shape is also found in snowflakes and the silicate composition of some soils. The Power of Limits: Proportional Harmonies in Nature, Art, and Architecture by Gyorgory Doczi has influenced this most recent body of work in how I am seeing into the patterns of nature.

Philosophy

Conceiving and making art enables me to explore and interpret the relationships of our visual world and gain new perspectives on our connections to them. Often an artwork is begun without a vision for the end product. By gathering materials, I have an opportunity to explore how they relate to each other. The final arrangement can come often months or years later.

Methods

In my studio I am using primarily acrylic paints and occasionally recycled house paints. Collage materials are derived from my own paintings or periodicals. I'm building my own frames in a variety of styles from new and recycled wood.
